RN Courses for International RNs Overview

RN international graduates who would like to work in California are required to pass the NCLEX-RN exam and gain a license from the California State Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). The BRN may also require you to take courses at an approved college prior to taking the NCLEX-RN exam.

What are the course descriptions?

Complex Adult Health – Theory: The course focuses on adult patients with unstable emergent critical illnesses. Students integrate nursing, technological and scientific knowledge with clinical judgment to potentiate optimal health with a diverse patient population. Students utilize comprehensive assessment techniques, advanced nursing skills and multiple nursing modalities to maximize optimal health.

Complex Adult Health – Clinical: The course focuses on adult patients with unstable emergent critical illnesses. Students integrate nursing, technological and scientific knowledge with clinical judgment to potentiate optimal health with a diverse patient population. The acute care units, Intensive care units, post-surgical units, telemetry units, emergency room units and surgical units in hospitals are used for the clinical component of this course. Students care for multiple patients on the medical-surgical units in the clinical component.

Maternal/Newborn – Theory: This course, sometimes referred to as an “OB” or “Obstetrics” course, provides theoretical instruction on the care of women during stages of pregnancy and care of newborns. Subject matter includes but is not limited to the following: prenatal care, assessment of normal pregnancy, fetal development, post-partum care, high risk pregnancy, high risk labor and delivery, high risk newborns.

Maternal/Newborn – Clinical: Clinical experience is provided in multiple healthcare settings. The Benner Model from Novice to Expert, the concepts from Jean Watson’s Caring Theory, and NLN Roles of Practice will all be used within the framework of the nursing process to implement care for culturally diverse maternal/newborn clients.

Registered Nurses (RNs) provide medical care to patients in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
