About the Vocational Nursing Program at San Jose

Our Vocational Nursing (VN) program in San Jose, California is diverse and comprehensive. Although you will gain vital nursing education and training, our VN program can be completed in as little as 12 months. If you prefer to attend night classes, we also offer an evening program that typically takes 17 months to complete. Students enrolled in our VN program will receive professional instruction, practical training, and access to healthcare facilities.

Our nursing labs are equipped to simulate what you see in the real world. In addition, our career-services team helps our students seek out new job opportunities through various career workshops, including resume rewrites, mock interviews, and employer outreach. Our 2019 placement rates are a true testament to the engagement of the San Jose career services team.

What You’ll Learn

Graduates of our San Jose Vocational Nursing program learn how to perform the general duties and responsibilities of a Vocational Nurse. Our ultimate goal is to prepare you for a successful career in nursing. The VN course curriculum maintains a balance of theory and hands-on experience. We will provide you with the necessary training to pursue an entry-level job in your chosen field.

Our nursing classes are furnished with individual student desks, whiteboards, and a projector. Our nursing labs contain patient-care stations to simulate actual hospital settings, and each lab is fully equipped to prepare you for the everyday procedures of a practicing nurse. These include IV poles, enteral feeding pumps, both adult and pediatric mannequins, scales, and blood pressure cuffs.

In our Vocational Nursing courses, you will learn how to perform the following tasks:

  • Assessing patients
  • Obtaining medical histories
  • Recording adverse reactions to medication
  • Administering prescribed medications
  • Starting intravenous fluids

Vocational Nursing Program Admissions Requirements for the San Jose Campus

If you’d like to enroll in our San Jose nursing program, please review some of our requirements below:

Apart from these requirements, you must also complete an academic interview and prerequisite course. This will help determine your eligibility for our Vocational Nursing classes.

Vocational Nursing Program with a Career-Driven Curriculum

Our program strives to prepare you for the NCLEX-PN licensure exam. Those that pass can pursue entry-level employment as Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs). Furthermore, our graduates are qualified to manage a variety of essential tasks, including the following:

+ Cooperating with clients, families, and community resources to provide holistic care.

+ Helping identify solutions to deliver basic nursing care within specific ethical or legal limitations.

+ Promoting the practice of vocational nursing.Our VN students are not required to complete any General Education subjects. However, they do receive practical experience at clinical sites during the program. They will be under the supervision of their instructors and learn how to perform their nursing duties in real-life settings.

Outside of San Jose Campus

The San Jose Campus

Bordered by Santa Teresa Boulevard and Great Oaks Boulevard, our San Jose Campus is also located near the W. Valley Freeway. Since we are located in the south side of the city, we also enroll students from areas south of San Jose. There are several nearby establishments, including shopping centers, schools, and apartment complexes. Various parks and eateries are nearby as well.

Many students enroll at Unitek because of the length of our San Jose VN program. Many of them also benefit from our shorter waiting period. This is particularly appealing for nursing students who have experienced the frustration of longer waiting periods at other institutions or community colleges.

We are 100% committed to helping you achieve your educational goals, by providing you with well-equipped classrooms and labs that are updated to reflect the needs of the industry. Students also enjoy spending their time at our on-campus library and student lounge.

Our campus can accommodate a range of schedules. We are typically open on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 10:50 PM. In addition, graduates of our VN program have commented on the fun and friendly environment we provide. Some have also noted the great support from our career development coordinators. What is the average class size in San Jose?

Our Vocational Nursing courses usually accommodate 36 students. We have found that this number is ideal for our active-learning environment. It is important that each student has enough time with their instructor and the skills lab.

How many Vocational Nursing sessions are offered each year?

We offer seven cohorts for Vocational Nursing, though we plan to add two more this year following approval from the board. This particular program is popular at our San Jose campus.

What do the class schedules typically look like?

In San Jose, we offer some variations of our class schedules. Nursing students may fall under one of the following:

  • Full-time Day: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Full-time PM: Monday through Friday, 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM
  • Part-time PM: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM and Saturdays, 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM

Are there any prerequisites for the San Jose Vocational Nursing program?

Yes, students who wish to enroll in the Vocational Nursing program in San Jose must first complete a prerequisite course that prepares them for the rigors of learning in a fast-paced academic environment. Topics covered during this Vocational Nursing prerequisite course include study skills, critical thinking, nursing education levels, and the role of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Students will also receive instruction on health care communication, web-based nursing resources, dosage calculations, and medical terminology related to the primary systems of the human body. The course consists of 80 hours of instruction and can be completed in as little as 2 weeks.
