1. Q: What is an Information Technology professional?
A: An increased emphasis on cloud computing, mobile computing, big data, and the “Internet of Things” is fueling demand for a new generation of skilled and certified IT specialists. Information Technology professionals are responsible for troubleshooting the day-to-day software, hardware, and security problems that users and businesses encounter.
2. Q: What is the work of an Information Technology professional?
A: While job duties might vary depending on the job title, employer, and company size, they typically include the following:
Computer User Support Specialist / Helpdesk Technician / Desktop Support Technician:
- Provide technical assistance to computer users
- Answer questions or resolve computer problems for clients in person, or via telephone or electronically
- Provide assistance concerning the use of computer hardware and software, including printing, installation, word processing, electronic mail, and operating systems
- Oversee the daily performance of computer systems
- Set-up equipment for employee use, performing or ensuring proper installation of cables, operating systems, or appropriate software
Network Support Technician:
- Test, troubleshoot, and evaluate existing network systems or segments of a network system
- Perform network maintenance to ensure networks operate correctly with minimal interruption

3. Q: How do you become an IT professional?

4. Q: What is the job outlook for IT professionals?
A: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of IT support specialists is projected to grow 10 percent by 2026, which is faster than the average for all occupations. They state that more IT support professionals will be needed as organizations continue to upgrade and expand their computer equipment and software.
The BLS also states that, while most computer support specialists have full-time schedules, some do not work typical 9-to-5 jobs. Because computer support is important for businesses, support services might need to be available 24 hours a day. As a result, many support specialists enjoy alternative schedules and work different hours.
5. Q: What is the average salary of an IT professional?
A: As with other professions, the salary of an IT professional can vary depending on location, employer, and prior experience. In May 2018, the BLS indicated that the median annual wage for computer network support specialists was $62,770, and the median annual wage for computer user support specialists was $50,980.
They state that the “median annual wages for computer network support specialists in the top industries in which they worked” were as follows:
- Data processing, hosting, and related services—$65,310
- Computer systems design and related services—$65,300
- Finance and insurance—$63,400
- Management of companies and enterprises—$61,550
